SilverSneakers® is a fitness and wellness program offered as a benefit through some Medicare Advantage Plans. Membership in SilverSneakers grants access to a number of gyms across the country, local fitness classes and meet-up groups, as well as online resources like live virtual classes, workout videos, healthy living articles, and more.

Classes and resources from SilverSneakers are specifically designed for the variety of fitness interests and lifestyles of adults 65 and older.

SilverSneakers Eligibility

Original Medicare (Parts A and B) does not cover fitness programs or gym memberships. However, if you have a Medicare Advantage Plan, you may be eligible for SilverSneakers or another fitness program. To see Silversneakers eligibility rules and find out if you qualify, simply go online to SilverSneakers.com and submit your information. If you are eligible, sign up and take your 16-digit SilverSneakers number to any of the participating locations for access to equipment and fitness classes. You can also access the many online classes and resources available once you have created a SilverSneakers account.

What is Included in SilverSneakers Membership?

  • Gym memberships and access to all fitness equipment at participating gyms (weights, treadmills, ellipticals etc.)
  • Exercise classes for different types of fitness levels and goals – cardio, strength building, dance, yoga, tai chi, etc.
    • Beginner and intermediate classes often include modifications for seated work or using a chair to help balance if necessary
    • Fall prevention, brain health, and stress management classes are also offered
  • Activities and classes at local tennis courts, pools, parks, and walking trails
  • Live online classes from the convenience of your home
  • 15,000+ fitness and community locations throughout the United States (you are able to enroll in multiple locations)
  • Video classes available on-demand
  • Fitness app for classes and activity tracking
  • Social events throughout the SilverSneakers community
  • Online resources with fitness and nutrition tips

For members who can’t access a participating fitness location or prefer to work out at home, SilverSneakers will provide a workout kit with a few tools for working out at home and using the online classes or on-demand workout videos.

What if my Medicare plan doesn’t include SilverSneakers?


If you have Medicare Parts A and B only, a Medicare Supplement Plan, or a Medicare Advantage that does not include SilverSneakers or a similar fitness program, you may be able to find a Medicare Advantage Plan in your area that does include SilverSneakers. Consult with a licensed insurance agent to learn more about the Medicare plans and benefits available to you, as well as the enrollment periods that may apply to your specific situation.

Enrollment Eligibility

Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)

Medicare Annual Enrollment Period runs each year from October 15 to December 7. What is the Annual Enrollment Period vs. Open Enrollment Period?

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

Your Initial Enrollment Period generally surrounds your 65th birthday but may occur if you otherwise become eligible for Medicare for the first time.

Special Enrollment Period (SEP)

You may be eligible if you experience a qualifying life event such as moving to a new zip code, losing employer coverage, or change in Medicaid status.
