How to find out if you’re missing out on important benefits during the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period

Your health is of vital importance, which means your health insurance is a big deal. We want to help you make sure you have a plan that’s just right for your needs. The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period isn’t just for individuals that are new to Medicare. It’s also the perfect time for people like you with an existing Medicare plan to evaluate your benefits, see if you’re missing out on important care and services, and enroll in a different plans.

Review Your Current Plan

If you’re currently enrolled in a Medicare plan other than just Original Medicare—such as Medicare Advantage or Medicare Part D—you should receive your Annual Notice of Change letter before the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 - December 7). These letters typically go out in September, and detail any changes to your plan for the upcoming year, such as different costs or benefits.

The annual changes also mean another plan in your area may offer new benefits that would be helpful to you. Recently permitted benefits include coverage for home health aides or transportation to and from medical appointments. Other possible benefits include meal delivery, membership in a local senior center, or money for over-the-counter purchases at your local Walmart or CVS. You owe it to yourself to look at whatever new options may be available.

If you’re only enrolled in Original Medicare—Parts A and B—then you’re almost certainly missing out on benefits. Medicare Advantage Plans offer many benefits not included in Original Medicare, including vision, dental, hearing, fitness, wellness, and prescription drug coverage. Some Medicare Advantage Plans even have premiums, deductibles, or copays as low as $0, so you may be able to receive additional benefits at no additional cost beyond your Part B premium.
