Medicare Annual Enrollment Period 2019

enroll-period-2019

The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) -- also known as Medicare Open Enrollment -- is a yearly opportunity for Medicare beneficiaries to make changes to their Medicare coverage, including joining, dropping, or changing Medicare Advantage, Supplement, or Prescription Drug plans. Medicare AEP for 2019 occurs from Tuesday, October 15 to Saturday, December 7.

Medicare plan providers will announce any changes to plan coverage or costs in September 2019. Medicare beneficiaries can choose not to make any changes to their plan enrollment during AEP, but may then be stuck with that plan for all of 2020, as there are limited options for changing plans outside of AEP.

AEP Preparation

With Medicare Annual Enrollment Period being such a critical time period for decisions about your healthcare coverage, preparation can be a benefit. First, we recommend marking the AEP dates on your calendar so you don’t miss it. Next, you may want to make notes about any complaints you have with your coverage, or changes you would like to see. By maintaining an ongoing list or simply creating one before AEP, you will be able to make a thoughtful decision about whether you want to pursue different coverage.

How to Enroll During AEP

If you want to research and enroll in Medicare plans during AEP, you have several options, including:

Speak with multiple agents

Many sales agents represent only one Medicare plan provider. You can find contact information for many different agents and contact them in turn, building comparisons of plans and ultimately enrolling with one. This is a time-consuming option.

DIY online

There are a few online research and enrollment options, such as our Medicare portal, where you can compare plans from a number of major Medicare plan providers and enroll autonomously online.

Contact one agent

If you have questions about plans or enrollment, you can also contact our licensed Medicare advocates, who represent a number of major Medicare plan providers and are committed to helping you find a plan that suits your health and financial needs.
