Take a Good Look: New Medicare Benefits for 2021

new-medicare-benefits-2021

It has been the kind of year that has made us all reassess the way we do everything, even things we’d typically take for granted. But 2020 has also brought improvements, including to Medicare.

Yes, Medicare plans have always gone through annual changes, but the benefits highlighted here are especially worth a second or third look as you navigate your next enrollment period. Don’t overlook the following refinements to Medicare as you wrap up your plan choices for 2021.

A Taste of Telemedicine

This year the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) temporarily relaxed their rules on telemedicine and expanded the types of telehealth services the government would help cover. For those with Original Medicare (Parts A and B), “fee-for-service” procedures are now included and those changes will carry into 2021.

Some of the medical services you can use via telehealth include the following:

  • Doctor visits
  • Outpatient care
  • Preventive care
  • Medical supplies

Keep in mind: While some telehealth services in the past have only required a voice call over the phone, Medicare-covered services require that both patients and their doctors make audio-video contact for appointments.

Change of Plans: Taking Advantage of Medicare Advantage

Premiums for Medicare Advantage Plans have been dropping and becoming even more competitive over the last few years. It’s a view of the larger market that you may have missed if you’ve just been happily sticking to the same plan for years.

Premiums will drop about 34 percent from where they stood back in 2017, down about 11 percent from a year ago, according to a report from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Over that same stretch, 2017 to 2020, new Medicare Advantage plans have swelled by over 2,100.

Complete Care: Dental, Vision and Hearing

For much of 2020, dental services were simply off the table for most Americans. As the country tightened restrictions on “non-essential services,” dental offices largely sat vacant — unable to provide anything beyond emergency dental services. That may have meant you had to hold tight for months as your plans for a new set of dentures or dental implants were effectively tabled.
