Medicare and Turning 65: Dos and Don’ts for Your Medicare Initial Enrollment Period (Continued)

DO: Research your options

Original Medicare (Parts A and B) isn’t your only option. You can enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan for additional benefits or enroll in a Medicare Supplement Plan to help pay for the 20 percent of your healthcare costs that Original Medicare doesn’t pay.

DON’T: Miss out on important benefits

Medicare Advantage Plans can provide additional benefits like vision, dental, hearing, fitness, and more. But there are often a variety of plans from different carriers available in each area. Be sure to compare plans and consider several providers, so you don’t miss out on benefits you want.

DO: Make a plan for prescription coverage

Original Medicare does not include prescription drug coverage. You can obtain coverage through a standalone Part D Plan OR with a Medicare Advantage Plan that includes prescription drug coverage. Be aware you may pay a penalty for not having prescription drug coverage after your Initial Enrollment Period.

DON’T: Forget to look at doctor availability

Provider networks can be an important factor in your Medicare plan choice. Many Medicare Advantage Plans offer cost savings by working within a specific network. Carefully consider which of your doctors you are (or are not) willing to change, especially long-term primary care physicians or specialists for major medical needs.
