Medicare Online: 3 Medicare Advantage Trends You Should Know About

If you plan to enroll in Medicare online, it’s a good idea to be up to date on the latest changes and trends before you choose a plan. Every day there are reports on new developments in healthcare. Read on to learn about what’s happening with Medicare Advantage Plans and what to look for in the future.

Choices Continue to Increase

We all like to have options, and this isn’t a problem when it comes to Medicare Advantage Plans. In fact, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) expect that insurance carriers will offer 600 new Medicare Advantage Plans in 2019, giving 91 percent of enrollees access to 10 or more plans in their area. It’s definitely worth taking a look at Medicare Advantage before you enroll in Medicare online, whether you’re new to Medicare or reviewing your plan during the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period.

Special Needs Plans Are Growing

Special Needs Plans (SNPS) are designed specifically for individuals living with chronic conditions like asthma, diabetes, or coronary artery disease. They include the same Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B services that all Medicare Advantage Plans cover, and tailor other benefits, provider choices, and drug formularies to meet the needs of special groups. Enrollment in Special Needs Plans has grown 55 percent over the last five years.

Supplemental Benefits Keep Expanding

Beginning in 2019, Medicare Advantage Plans can now offer supplemental benefits not covered under Original Medicare, if they diagnose, compensate for physical impairments, diminish the impact of injuries or health conditions, and/or reduce avoidable emergency room utilization. Medicare Advantage enrollees can now receive meal delivery in more circumstances, and transportation for non-medical reasons like grocery shopping. In 2019, 13 percent of Medicare Advantage Plans offer family caregiver support and 3.4 percent offer in-home support services. Insurance carrier adoption of these supplemental benefits is still growing. That, combined with the increased focus on benefits that help prevent disease and keep people healthy, make it likely this trend will continue.
