Medicare Online: What You Need to Know About Long-term Care Before Enrolling

Emergency and major healthcare needs are important, but before you enroll in Medicare online it’s just as critical to understand how you’ll manage routine activities such as eating, socializing, and taking care of our body’s daily needs. Here’s what you need to know about Medicare and long-term or daily care.

Original Medicare doesn’t include coverage for long-term or daily care.

Original Medicare—Parts A and B—includes coverage for hospital, medically-necessary, and preventative care, but not for many types of long-term or daily in-home care.

Medicare Advantage Plans, which are offered by private insurance companies, include the same coverage as Original Medicare and often provide additional benefits as well, such as dental, vision, hearing, and prescription drug coverage.

Medicare Advantage Plans are now allowed to offer new long-term care benefits.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) carefully regulates which benefits Medicare Advantage Plans can offer. CMS recently expanded the permissions for benefits related to long-term and in-home care. Carriers are still adding these new benefits to their Medicare Advantage Plans, and available benefits vary based on the plans in your area.

Some new benefits that may be available include:

  • Home helpers/in-home support
  • Transportation
  • Meal delivery
  • Safety/assistive devices
  • Day center visits
  • Fitness membership
  • And more!

Benefits are likely to be added for many 2020 plans, so it’s worth your while to compare plans when researching and enrolling in Medicare online.

You can find Medicare Advantage Plans with new benefits on the Medicare Online Enrollment Portal.

Whether you’re new to Medicare or just looking to optimize your health coverage, you may be able to benefit from these changes to Medicare coverage. Using the Medicare Online Enrollment Portal, you can easily search for Medicare Advantage Plans, compare available benefits, and enroll in the plan of your choice. This tool is accessible from anywhere, at any time, for your convenience. The portal also includes options for comparing your prescriptions and physicians against a plan’s formulary and network.

Keep in mind that the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period is October 15 through December 7, and it’s a great time for Medicare beneficiaries to enroll in a new Medicare plan. It’s also good to understand other key enrollment periods.
