5 Tips for Enrolling in Medicare Online

Medicare online enrollment is easier than you think. We’ve prepared some tips to help make sure it’s a simple, stress-free enrollment experience.

Use a Secure Website

The Medicare enrollment process requires personal information like your Medicare ID number, date of birth, and more. To help ensure your identifying information remains private when you enroll in Medicare online, you want to use a website that transfers and stores that information securely. A secure website will use SSL encryption, which you can recognize from the “https” in the URL and the closed padlock icon that appears next to the URL on most browsers.

Find Plans from Multiple Insurance Carriers

Many insurance carriers offer a way to find their Medicare Advantage Plans and enroll online. But there are likely plans from several carriers available in your area, and if you only look at plans from one carrier, you may miss out on a plan that’s right for you. Switching back and forth from multiple carrier websites is cumbersome and time-consuming. You may prefer the Medicare Online Enrollment Portal, where you can easily search for, sort, and compare plans from various insurance providers.

Compare Benefits across Plans

The benefits offered in Medicare Advantage Plans can change each year, and sometimes entirely new categories of benefits are allowed. Vision, dental, hearing, and prescription drug coverage are Medicare Advantage Plan staples. You may also find benefits like free fitness programs, over-the-counter coverage, caregiver support, meal delivery, transportation, and more.

Look for Your Physicians and Prescriptions

Before enrolling in Medicare online, it’s good to know whether your physicians are in the plan’s network and whether your prescription drugs are covered by the plan’s formulary (if the plan includes Part D coverage). Skipping these steps could lead to unexpected costs or inconvenience.

Have Your Information Ready

When you’re ready to enroll in Medicare online, be sure to collect your enrollment information. It can be very frustrating to have to get up and search the house for the right card or missing piece of information when you’re in right the middle of filling out a form.

We recommend having:

  • Your Medicare ID card
  • Your driver’s license or similar information
  • A list of your physicians
  • A list of your prescriptions
