How to Ease the Rising Cost of Prescription Drug Coverage with Medicare Extra Help

Many Medicare beneficiaries lose sleep over the escalating cost of prescription drug coverage. For qualified individuals, Medicare Extra Help can ease the burden and eliminate the stress. Read on to find of who’s eligible for Extra Help, how to apply and more.

Medicare Extra Help in a Nutshell

Medicare Extra Help is a Medicare program designed to help individuals with low income and limited assets pay for part or all of their Prescription Drug Plan, or Medicare Part D, premiums, deductibles and copays.

Who is eligible for Medicare Extra Help?

You may be eligible for Extra Help if you:

  • Have a Medicare Savings Program
  • Receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits but not Medicaid
  • Are eligible to receive both Medicaid and Medicare (dual eligibility)
How do you get Medicare Extra Help?

You can apply for Extra Help through the Social Security Administration (SSA), either online or by calling 1-800-772-1213. You’ll want to have your Social Security card, tax returns, life insurance policies and bank statements handy. If you don’t qualify, you can re-apply later.

Does Medicare Extra Help automatically provide prescription drug coverage?

No, applying for Extra Help doesn’t automatically give you prescription drug coverage. You’ll want to apply for Extra Help first, then you’ll still need to enroll in either a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan, or a Medicare Advantage Plan that includes prescription drug coverage. The good news is, if you’re eligible for Extra Help, you can enroll in, change, or drop prescription drug coverage at any time.
