Medicare Enrollment: Why Consider a Medicare Advantage Plan?

medicare-enrollment-why-medicare-advantage

When you’re considering your Medicare enrollment options—either as a new Medicare beneficiary or just for a refresh, perhaps during the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period—Medicare Advantage Plans are worth considering. So why might you choose a Medicare Advantage Plan for your healthcare coverage?

You need eyeglasses (or other vision care)

Original Medicare—Parts A and B—doesn’t include coverage for most vision care, such as eye exams, eyeglasses, contact lenses, and more. Many Medicare Advantage Plans offer vision care coverage.

You require regular dental care

Dental care beyond occasional cleanings can quickly become expensive. Original Medicare doesn’t include coverage for dental care, so if you’re concerned about fillings, dentures, root canals, or other dental services, you may want to find a Medicare Advantage Plan.

You regularly spend money on over-the-counter (OTC) medical supplies

Some Medicare Advantage Plans offer a certain amount of money to be spent on over-the-counter supplies at your local grocery or drug store. Each plan has a different list of eligible supplies, but common ones include:

  • OTC medicines: pain relief, allergies, and more
  • Bandages/Bandaids
  • Vitamins
  • Ear care
  • Fitness trackers
  • First aid supplies
  • Supplements
  • Support devices - may include humidifiers, pillboxes, safety rails, etc.
You have an interest in fitness

Staying active can be a critical aspect of your healthcare. Some Medicare Advantage Plans offer membership to local gyms and recreation centers, or specialized fitness programs, like SilverSneakers. They may also provide online fitness resources, like workout videos or training plans. Many participants find these fitness programs serve as a social function as well, helping them to make friends and feel more engaged in their communities.

You like convenience

If you don’t enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan, you’ll probably need to enroll in a Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan to get prescription drug coverage. Not having prescription drug coverage can lead to increased Medicare premiums for many years.

However, many Medicare Advantage Plans also offer prescription drug coverage, so instead of enrolling in (and managing) two separate health plans, you could have all your benefits in one plan.

Simplify Medicare Enrollment

Medicare enrollment can be overwhelming. We offer two easy ways to find and enroll in Medicare Advantage Plans. The Medicare Online Enrollment Portal lets you search available Medicare Advantage Plans using your zip code, easily browse the benefits or compare plans side-by-side. When you find a plan that’s great for you, just follow the guided enrollment process.

If online Medicare enrollment doesn’t appeal to you, our Medicare Advocates are available to help you over the phone. Call for your no-cost, personal consultation: 1-800-991-4407 / TTY 711 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Eastern, Monday through Friday.
