DIY Medicare Enrollment Online

Did you know that you can enroll for Medicare Advantage plans online? If you’re not keen on phone calls or just have an independent streak, online enrollment might be a good fit for you.

Here’s what you need to know about do-it-yourself Medicare enrollment.

Medicare Advantage Online Enrollment

Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans are offered by a number of carriers and can often be enrolled in online. Exploring online enrollment through an individual carrier will limit your options to only the plans available from that carrier, but there are multi-carrier resources, like easyMedicare.com’s online marketplace. With a marketplace, you will be able to compare plans from different carriers before choosing.

Know your enrollment periods

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) have designated enrollment periods during which individuals can join, switch, or drop Medicare Advantage plans. These include the Initial Enrollment Period (IEP), seven months surrounding an individual’s 65th birthday; the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), yearly from October 15 to December 7; and Special Enrollment Periods (SEP), which occur for a number of circumstances, such as moving.

Prepare to evaluate the plans

Making a list of your preferences in a plan may help you keep your priorities in mind while you review plans. You could also use a series of questions to evaluate plans, like this:

  • Is the cost of this plan affordable for me?
  • Does the plan cover the health services I want and need?
  • Are my physicians and pharmacies in the plan network?
  • Will this plan work when I travel in different states or out of country?
Make a list

Before enrolling in a plan, you may want to make a list of the physicians you visit and the prescription drugs that you need. To choose a Medicare Advantage plan that suits you, you will want to check that your doctors are in-network, and that the pricing for your prescriptions fits your financial needs.

Stay safe

You will need to enter identifying information for these enrollments, like your name and social security number. You should not have to pay an enrollment fee. The only costs are the premium of the plan you sign up for and the Medicare Part A and B premiums that you pay. A company or agent is not allowed to charge you a fee for the actual enrollment.
