Medicare Enrollment: New Reasons to Consider a Medicare Advantage Plan (Continued)

  • 87% include dental benefits, such as routine exams and cleanings, and x-rays
  • 68% include over-the-counter benefits to help pay for items, such as vitamins, toothpaste, and cold medicine

Plans vary by geography, so it’s important to find out exactly which benefits are included in plans you’re considering during Medicare enrollment.

Supplemental Benefits—As a result of recent rule changes by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Medicare Advantage Plans have the flexibility to offer benefits that go beyond what’s medically necessary, treating the whole person. The Kaiser Family Foundation reports the following details regarding Medicare Advantage Plans in 2020 with supplemental benefits:

  • 96% include meal benefits
  • 92% include transportation
  • 59% include telehealth benefits
  • 54% include in-home support

A Duke University report shows 61 Medicare Advantage Plans also offer in-home palliative care in 2020. Even benefits like adult day care services, caregiver support, and home modifications may be included in some Medicare Advantage Plans.

Availability of supplemental benefits may vary based on location and health status. Some are targeted at Medicare beneficiaries with chronic illnesses, for example, home air and carpet cleaning for someone with severe asthma. That means not every member of a particular plan will have access to the same set of benefits. These benefits are designed to address environmental factors that may affect a person’s health, functioning, quality of life, and risk levels.

Cost—Medicare Advantage 2020 premiums are the lowest in 13 years, at an average of around $23. And, while Original Medicare doesn’t include prescription drug coverage, the Kaiser Family Foundation reports 90 percent of Medicare Advantage Plans in 2020 include prescription drug coverage, and 93 percent of Medicare beneficiaries have access to these comprehensive plans with a $0 premium. You’re still required to pay your Medicare Part B premium. Learn more about Medicare enrollment costs.
