A Better Medicare Alliance (BMA) poll of 2,000 seniors found 45 percent of older adults didn’t know about Medicare Advantage when they first completed their Medicare enrollment, and 32 percent wish they had known more. Medicare plans change every year, so whether you’re familiar with Medicare Advantage Plans or not, it’s always a good idea to stay informed about changes from year to year.

There have been a record number of Medicare Advantage Plan enrollments in 2020 and beneficiary satisfaction continues to grow. That same BMA poll reported 94 percent of Medicare Advantage enrollees are “very satisfied” with the care they receive under the plan, 94 percent said they’re satisfied with the selection of doctors, physicians and specialists offered. This article reviews some of the recent changes in Medicare Advantage Plans that may be helpful when it comes time to complete your Medicare enrollment.

More reasons than ever to consider a Medicare Advantage Plan in 2020

More Choices—The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) reports Medicare beneficiaries in 2020 have an average of 39 Medicare Advantage Plans to choose from, compared to 33 in 2019. And 855 Special Needs Plans (SNPs) are available in 2020, compared to 717 in 2019, a 19 percent increase.

Extra Benefits—All Medicare Advantage Plans cover everything that’s included in Original Medicare. Many plans go beyond that to include extra benefits that aren’t covered in Parts A and B—and the percentage of plans with these additional benefits is increasing all the time. Healthcare consulting firm Avalere Health reports the following details around Medicare Advantage Plans with extra benefits in 2020:
