FAQs About Medicare Enrollment

It’s normal to have lots of questions about Medicare enrollment. Your Medicare enrollment experience should run a lot smoother with answers to some of the most common questions.

Who can enroll?

Medicare enrollment is most common for United States citizens age 65 and older. Some individuals under 65 can enroll in Medicare because of disability or dual-eligibility through Medicaid. Once enrolled in Medicare, beneficiaries can then enroll in plans like Medicare Advantage, a Medicare Supplement, or Medicare Part D.

When can I enroll?

Medicare enrollment can’t be done randomly at any time throughout the year. Here are the specific windows when you may be able to complete Medicare enrollment.

Initial Enrollment Period
Your seven-month Initial Enrollment Period begins three months before your 65th birthday, includes your birthday month, and concludes three months after your birthday.

Annual Enrollment Period
This enrollment period happens every year from October 15 to December 7. It’s your primary opportunity to enroll in or change Medicare Advantage Plans after your Initial Enrollment Period has passed.

Open Enrollment Period
The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period occurs from January 1 through March 31 each year. During this enrollment period, Medicare Advantage enrollees may change their Medicare Advantage Plans one time.

Special Enrollment Periods
These Medicare enrollment periods are triggered by special circumstances, and are generally two to three months long. Learn more about Special Enrollment Periods.
