Medicare and Your Zip Code

Your Medicare Options

Medicare Parts A and B (Original Medicare) are offered by the federal government and function exactly the same way for beneficiaries all across the United States. You might have different healthcare providers or pharmacies, certainly, but your costs and coverage won’t be different from a friend in another state.

However, the availability of Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, and Medicare Prescription Drug Plans is determined at a zip code level. That’s right—your friend who happens to live across the line in a different county may have access to different Medicare plans.

Medicare and Moving Zip Codes

If you move while on Medicare, even just to another part of the same city, it’s important to check your coverage and find out if you need to enroll in a different Medicare plan. There is a two-month Medicare Special Enrollment Period that allows you to change plans if you are moving or have recently moved.

Plan Changes in the Same Zip Code

Not moving? The Medicare plans in your zip code can still change. Insurance carriers may remove their plan from year to year, change the benefits and costs, or offer a new plan. A plan in your area may be rated 5 stars by the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS), their highest quality rating for Medicare plans. Additionally, if you move in or out of a facility such as assisted living, a nursing home, or prison, you may be eligible for a different Medicare plan.

If you become eligible for Medicaid, the state and federal program that assists individuals and families with a low income, you might qualify for Medicare Dual Special Needs Plans. If you have a chronic illness, you may be eligible for a Special Needs plan developed for the medical needs of that specific condition.

All of these different factors make it important to review your coverage on a regular basis so you have the plan that makes the most sense for you. There are several Medicare enrollment opportunities throughout the year, as well as individual opportunities when you have big life changes. Don’t miss out on your chance to optimize your coverage!
