Relocating to a New Service Area

Here are some specific examples in which you can become eligible
for Medicare Special Enrollment due to moving to a new location.

  1. You have recently moved to a new address that is no longer in your plan’s service area.
  2. You moved back to the United States after living outside of the country.
  3. You just moved into, currently living in, or moved out of a long-term care facility.
  4. You were released from incarceration.

What Else Makes You Eligible for the Medicare Special Enrollment Period?

Not only does moving to a new location make you eligible for the Special Enrollment Period, but so do the following:

You lose your current coverage

  1. You are no longer eligible for Medicare
  2. You left your coverage from your employer and/or union
  3. You had drug coverage through a Medicare Cost Plan and then left the plan

You have the opportunity to receive other coverage

  1. You have a chance to enroll in other coverage offered by your union or employer
  2. You are enrolled in a Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly plan

Your plan changes its contract with Medicare

  1. Medicare terminates your plan’s contract
  2. Your Medicare Advantage, Prescription Drug or Medicare Cost Plan’s contract was not renewed with Medicare

Other special situations include: you are eligible for both Medicare/Medicaid, you qualify for Extra Help paying for Medicare Prescription Drug coverage, you are enrolled in a State Pharmaceutical Assistance Program or lost SPAP eligibility and more.
