Medicare and COVID-19: What You Need to Know About the Medicare Special Enrollment Period

The COVID-19 pandemic has created unique circumstances for Medicare beneficiaries. To ensure as many people as possible are able to get the health coverage they need during this crisis, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) have approved an emergency Special Enrollment Period for Medicare beneficiaries affected by the COVID-19 emergency. Eligible individuals who were unable to, and did not make an election during another valid election period, such as the Medicare Open Enrollment Period that ended March 31, 2020, may use this Special Enrollment Period to enroll or dis-enroll in Medicare plans.

Here are answers to common questions about Medicare and COVID-19, and this Special Enrollment Period.

Who can take advantage of the COVID-19 Special Enrollment Period?

The COVID-19 Special Enrollment Period is available nationwide to residents of all states, tribes, territories, and the District of Columbia. It’s also available to those individuals who don’t live in the affected areas but rely on help making healthcare decisions from friends or family members who live in the affected areas.

How do I know if I’m eligible?

If you’re a Medicare beneficiary who is affected by COVID-19 and was unable to, and did not make an enrollment or dis-enrollment election during another valid election period, you may be eligible for this Special Enrollment Period.

You may be considered “affected” and eligible for this Special Enrollment Period if you:

  • Had another valid election period at the time of the incident period; and
