2019 Medicare Advantage Online Enrollment and Benefit Changes

New resources make it more convenient than ever to research and enroll in Medicare Advantage online. Here are changes to be aware of for 2019.

Medicare Advantage Online

You can quickly and easily enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan online with the Medicare Online Enrollment Portal. Search for plans in your area and easily compare the costs and benefits to find the one that’s a good fit for you. Once you’ve chosen a plan, it’s easy to enroll online using the guided form.

Know Your Enrollment Periods

You can only enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan during certain times designated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) — A seven-month period that begins three months before your 65th birthday and ends three months after, during which you’re eligible to sign up for Original Medicare, a Medicare Advantage Plan, and a Medicare Supplement Plan.

Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) — A yearly enrollment period that occurs from October 15 – December 7. This is an opportunity for you to enroll in or switch Medicare plans.

Open Enrollment Period (OEP) — An enrollment period that was reinstated in 2019. From January 1 – March 31, individuals can make one change between Medicare Advantage Plans or switch from a Medicare Advantage Plan to Original Medicare only.

Special Enrollment Period (SEP) — An enrollment period that’s dependent on specific conditions, such as moving, losing health coverage or being affected by a declared emergency like a hurricane or earthquake.

Medicare Advantage Benefits

Medicare Advantage Plans must include all the coverage offered through Medicare Parts A and B (Original Medicare). Many Medicare Advantage Plans also offer additional benefits, such as:

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services recently made changes that allow new benefits in Medicare Advantage Plans, such as transportation using ride-share companies like Uber and Lyft. Because of the new permissions, Medicare Advantage Plans in 2019 and 2020 are offering previously unseen benefits. Some Medicare Advantage Plans even have $0 premiums, so you may be able to gain additional benefits without paying a larger premium. It’s a good time to evaluate your coverage and find out which new plan benefits are being offered in your area.

To find out more about the benefits offered by Medicare Advantage Plans in your area, you can call our Medicare Advocates at 1-800-991-4407 / TTY 711 from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Eastern, Monday to Friday.
